Gitealors - Abbaye de Fontfroide

Site Navigation

The Abbaye de Fontfroide: founded in 1093 by Benedictine monks, this beautiful abbey later became cistercian. The setting is lovely and the architecture is superb. The abbey was named after the 'fons frigidus' or cold stream, which flows through the valley. It is about an hour's drive east from Villemagne. and is not far from Narbonne and the coast. Guided tours are available.

For our American readers, the cloisters at Fort Tryon, New York, are an exact copy of those at Fontfroide. There is a plaque at Fort Tryon explaining the links between the two.
